Am I the leader God is looking for? The Call for Spiritual Leadership

February 7, 2019

Are you the leader God is looking for?

Hmmm….. that is a bold question!

When Jesus selected his crew of world changers he brought in the most motley bunch of randoms!  It’s strange isn’t it? I mean, if you’re on an elite mission to save the planet, USUALLY (I‘m pulling this from movies )  you bring in only the best of the best and the brightest of bright….. not a random person muddling through a life of seeming mediocrity.

They probably didn’t have the highest honors or fanciest degrees, they were no bodies going no where….

But you wanta know what they did have?

RESPONSIVENESS!

And dare I say that is all they needed by the power of Christ!

Let me show you what I mean … In Matthew 4: 18 – 22

Matthew 4:18-22 New Living Translation (NLT)

The First Disciples

18 One day as Jesus was walking along the shore of the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers—Simon, also called Peter, and Andrew—throwing a net into the water, for they fished for a living. 19 Jesus called out to them, “Come, follow me, and I will show you how to fish for people!” 20 And they left their nets at once and followed him.

21 A little farther up the shore he saw two other brothers, James and John, sitting in a boat with their father, Zebedee, repairing their nets. And he called them to come, too. 22 They immediately followed him, leaving the boat and their father behind.

Do you see it? Do you see in yourself what I see in the disciples?

Their belief led to immediate obedience! They were called by Christ AND THEY CAME!

That takes wild faith….  That takes fearless obedience….That takes reckless courage!

ARE YOU READY FOR IT?

Is God calling your to step into spiritual leadership but your stuck asking questions?

Don't wait for him to give you all the reasons why you are the right person … don't wait for the syllabus or the “ how-to guide"… don't wait to hear if there is an award for it … don't stop to ask “whats in it for me?!” .... Simply come!

Simply come.

That is the first step to spiritual leadership!

When God calls  YOU RESPOND.

But be prepared, because WHEN GOD BRINGS YOU INTO YOUR CALLING HE CALLS YOU OUT OF YOUR COMFORT ZONE – A cross stands in the path of spiritual leadership, and a leader must take it up!

Matthew 16:24 New Living Translation (NLT)

24 Then Jesus said to his disciples, “If any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross, and follow me.

  1. You must first deny yourself – This means evacuating your known world and telling your flesh, “ you don’t win today!"

  2. Take up your cross - This means picking up the mission of Christ and bearing it as your own.

  3. And come after me -  A true leader must be a master of following the One and only leader. Are you willing to yield the throne of your heart to Him?

 J. Oswald Chambers  once said,“Adding [spiritual] leadership potential to our lives usually requires that we shake off negative elements that hold us back!”

So I will ask you again, are you ready?

Maybe you are! I pray, in fact, that you are!

You might be asking, "God, I am ready to be used but what would you have me do? What does it even mean to BE a spiritual leader?"

Well the world would say that leadership is:

- Some one who is self-confident

- Makes their own decisions

- Is ambitious

- Enjoys command

- Is supremely independent!

This is the standard of worldly leadership.

But God, as usual is entirely countercultural.  He says a leader is:

- Confident in God

- Seeks God’s will

- Is humble

- Delights in obey God’s commands

- And depends on GOD, not self

What God is trying to say is that spiritual leadership is SERVANT LEADERSHIP!

"just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many" (Matthew 20:28)

Spiritual leadership is humbling yourself to take on the task of the least of these for the sake of the body of Christ & for the glory of God. What will you do when no one is appreciating, when no one is applauding, when you don’t even applaud yourself?

  • What does that even mean? Well let's break it down...

    • It means that spiritual leadership is committing to give a life of silent sermons. It means that it as much about your actions as it is your words.

                                              i.     Paul says"Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ" (1 Corinthians 11:1).

iii.     You can talk the talk but can you walk the walk? For real, ask your self, am I living out obedience to Christ, in hopes that it would be pleasing to God and stir up a desire in those around me to pursue him too?

Do you know the difference between a sheep herder and a shepherd?

A sheep herder goes behind the sheep and corrals them by force and pressure BUTa shepherd  can simply call out to his flock and they will come without impetus, because they know he loves them and will protect them!

SPIRITUAL LEADERSHIP ISN’T SHOVING PEOPLE ALONG THE PATH OF RIGHTEOUSNESS…IT IS LOVING PEOPLE IN SUCH A WAY THAT THEY WANT TO FOLLOW YOU ALONG THE PATH OF RIGHTEOUSNESS.

Let me say it clearer...

SPIRITUAL LEADERSHIP ISN'T SHOVING PEOPLE TO CHRIST, IT'S LOVING THEM TO CHRIST!

Y'all this gets me fired up like nothing else! But it comes at a high cost! Are you ready for it?
